Who can you invite to an IEP meeting?

Parents can invite anyone to an IEP meeting who they believe Education Advocacycan provide a unique perspective on the disability and the student’s ability to cope or function with the disability. This can included family, friends, mentors, tutors, coaches (Big Brothers, Big Sisters, YMCA Programs, etc.), treatment providers (BHR, mental health, etc.), even self-taught psychologists.

This applies to school districts as well. Districts can invite anyone to an IEP meeting who they believe can provide a unique perspective on the disability and the student’s ability to cope or function with the disability. Districts should ask parents if the additional person can attend before the meeting and then have the parent sign an authorization before any confidential information is discussed in the meeting.
